To the Iowa Democratic Party: Do Better

Hello,

As a civic-minded Iowan, I have contacted my representatives at the state and federal level on multiple occasions. Apparently, you took that to mean that I am a Democrat and that I want to be added to all of your mailing lists.

You were incorrect.

I am an unaffiliated voter. In case you hadn’t done the research, we are the largest (and fastest growing) block of voters in the nation (and Iowa). As an unaffiliated voter, being repeatedly pelted by Democratic campaign emails could be helpful, if they had any content.

Unfortunately, they don’t.

Up until this point, the only messages I’ve been able to glean from the many, many emails I’ve received is that you are not Republicans, and that, in and of itself, makes you worth voting for. One guy runs marathons. Several of your served our country (thank you). Several of you are in healthcare. Some of you are career politicians. But the only real takeaway you’ve given me so far is that you are not Republicans. And that should be enough, according to you.

I can assure you, this is not the case.

The Iowa Democratic Party is part of the same money-drowned system that the Republicans are part of. You are all complicit in putting your donors ahead of your constituents. You are all guilty of placing your party ahead of your people. This is why unaffiliated is the fastest growing class of voter. This is why voter turnout is abysmal. This is why I am not a member of your or any other party.

If you really want unaffiliated voters to pick you, tell us why you, the candidate, matter. Not why your party matters. Certainly not why the “other” party is “bad”. But you. Can you tell my why I should vote for you without mentioning your party or your opponent? So far, the evidence shows, no.

Do better, Iowa Democrats. Do better, Iowa Republicans (don’t think you’re off the hook because you follow the Elephant). Do better, Iowa and America.

Because when you get right down to it, the reason we have this situation (“At least we aren’t those guys!”) is because we voters let it happen.

So do better. Starting right now. Don’t wait for election day. Get started right now. Do better.
