You’ve got an idea for a story. Great. I’ll go out and see if it works. And… it doesn’t. Oh, ok, then we’ll do something else. Really.
Or we could completely obsess about that one idea and spend all day working on it even thought it turned out not to be an issue. Because every single idea we come up with must be a story. We couldn’t possibly be wrong or out of touch. We couldn’t possibly just be simply misinformed. Or jumping the gun. Maybe it’ll be a story in two months. We could try back then. No? We have to do it today? *sigh* Alright, I’ll come up with something.
Seriously. Just because an idea is proposed, doesn’t mean its a story. Its an idea. Its not a story yet. That has to be discovered. And if you find out its not, that’s ok. Just move on. Now. Move the hell on. Stop beating a dead horse.
We journalists do seem to have a problem with that don’t we? Beating dead horses. But that’s a rant for another day.
