If I don’t get my sales up in the next 4 weeks (maybe), and start taking about 10 more calls a day (fat chance), I’ll be fired. Yep, fired. Not because I can’t help people. No! I do that great. All my supervisors agree on that. I know the product, know the tech, know the answers. And its not because the customers don’t like me. No! Supes are clear on that too. I do a great job of asking the necessary questions while still developing a rapport with the caller. So I do everything well, better than well, except 2 things. And those 2 things will get me fired.
Yeah, I knew that when I signed up. No it hasn’t changed. But that doesn’t change the fact that its stupid. By all means, move me out of the department I’m in. I can’t meet the minimums there. I agree. But instead of firing me, why not move me to one of the departments where sales isn’t a factor but tech and product knowledge is? Wouldn’t that make sense?
Of course it does. Unfortunately, the rules say to fire me. Can’t break the rules. Gotta follow the letter rather than use your common sense. I’m going to start calling it Uncommon Sense, because, think about it, it is no longer common to have common sense. Think of the people you work with. The ones who steal office supplies and then complain when the company says it doesn’t have money for raises. The people driving on your commute that don’t merge immediately, but go around the backup to the exit lane, therefore making the backup worse. Yeah, those people. Unfortunately, that’s the kind of sense that’s “common”.
So, new phrase. Get used to it.
