So I’ve only seen 3 episodes so far, but I’m already hating the show. I know, I must be crazy. Everyone loves it. I just don’t understand why.
We’ve got an entire cast of asshole men, women who let the men do anything (even pander to their horrible behavior) and a society that rewards them for it. And its set in an appalling time in our nation’s history, full of racism and sexism, but doesn’t do anything to make those look bad. It actually seems to reward this behavior.
I’m quite glad I didn’t live in the early 60’s. I would have had no friends and no dates. I would not have behaved like these selfish, self-centered assholes. I’m not racist or sexist. And I’m not willing to undercut co-workers to get ahead. Also, I don’t think a pick up line is “everyone is at lunch, we could push the sofa against the door so no-one comes in” so apparently I’d never get laid. And if any woman tried to act subservient to me, I’d tell her to grow a spine, which probably would not endear me to her.
Come to think of it, I don’t have a lot of friends now. Is it for the same reasons? Am I blind to the fact that our world is still this way? Do I still hold myself above the mainstream, make others uncomfortable with my holier-than-thou, lawful-good, paladin behavior? Is my pie-in-the-sky-realism totally out of sync? I imagine its possible, though I would hate to think we’ve traveled so little from that era. I shudder at the thought.
Long story short, Don Draper is a douche.
